The creation of the Internet has changed exponentially the way we shop. Nowadays it is possible to purchase anything from the comfort of your home and have it delivered within a couple of days.
As a student who is constantly busy with coursework and exams, I have to use my time wisely and prioritize the tasks that need to be done. As a result, I started fulfilling my fashion needs online – it is convenient, time-efficient, and offers a good variety. To get the best experience, however, there are a few simple tricks I learned thanks to practice. If you want to learn all about them, scroll down and enjoy.
Get familiar with the retailer’s size charts and return policy!
One of the main issues when shopping for clothes online is finding the accurate size. At first, I was completely confused by all the different sizing. A specific size that fits me from one shop, I could not even zip up when ordered from another retailer. Eventually I figured it out. The first thing you should do when you visit an online clothing store for the first time is to make yourself familiar with its sizing charts. Even though most shops within your country might be using the same system, the measurements tend to differ.
However, finding the right fit is not the only trouble. It could also happen that the fabric of a garment irritates your skin or the colour does not complement your features. In such cases, you should be well-acquainted with the shop’s return and refund policy to replace your purchase or ask for your money. It is not a sophisticated procedure, but it took me some time before I mastered the steps.
Watch hauls on YouTube to get a real opinion on a garment!
Online retailers such as Shein, Boohoo or ASOS offer an abundance of trendy clothing for affordable prices. We all know, however, that most of the times a decrease in price results from a decrease in quality. Therefore, before putting a piece of clothing in my basket, I always look for a YouTube try-one haul, featuring a specific online retailer. There are plenty of YouTubers buying a bunch of different stuff, trying them on, and reviewing them for the viewers. Usually, these videos are not sponsored so you can get an honest opinion on the quality of the item, how it feels, does it match its description etc. For me, hearing a positive review on a fashion piece from a real person is far more convincing than reading an exaggerated summary on the actual website.
Below I listed some YouTubers I find very entertaining and helpful so you can check them out:
Pay with a virtual card to assure a safe transaction!
Another major issue concerning online shopping is data protection and safety. Luckily, I have never been a victim of a data breach. However, some friends of mine, as well as lots of influencers, share stories of entrusting websites with storing card details. What follows is a fraud attack, which the online retailer had no protection against, and you lose all control over your details and money.
In order to avoid such negative scenarios, I started using virtual cards for all my internet purchases. These cards have no physical equivalent since they are specially designed to be used online. iCard provided me with two such cards for free, which give no access to my main monetary account. Be it that my details got leaked, I will lose only the amount loaded into the virtual card. Moreover, since the cards are stored in my digital wallet, I no longer have to insert the payment details manually. I can simply copy-paste the card number, CVV and the expiry date. Super practical, right? Virtual cards are not at all hard to use but offer a lot in return!
Don’t buy immediately to get a special discount!
Compared to a regular shop, online retailers offer promotion codes and deals all around the clock. Be it that you are a first-time user or maybe there is a limited amount of a particular piece which they want to sell out fast – there is always some discount of which you can get an advantage.
One trick I have learned is to delay your purchase. What I mean is that when you put an item inside your basket, you are not obligated to pay for it immediately. After a day or two shops tend to send out an email encouraging you to go back to their website and buy the product. The additional incentive is that they provide you with a one-time discount code decreasing the item’s price. So, if you are not in a hurry, just put the clothing inside your basket and pay at the right moment.
Use online shopping comparison sites to find the best deals!
The online market is so competitive that retailers often struggle to provide their customers with a unique website experience or service. As a result, they compete, for the most part, not on a differentiation point rather than offering the lowest prices. In consequence, a clothing or an accessory you bought from one shop could sometimes be found in another one for a lower cost.
Last year, I desperately needed a belt bag for a concert I went to, so I did not do any research and bought the first one I saw. It was a last-minute purchase, so there was no time for comparisons. Later on, I started getting ads for the same bag from a couple of other stores, and it was priced much cheaper.
The lesson – if you have sufficient time, compare. There are plenty of online shopping comparison sites, which can help you find the best possible deal. My personal favourite is Google Shopping.
