Once again, Varna turned into a gathering point for amateur and professional sailors during the “Cor Caroli iCard” regatta.
As a general sponsor, iCard is very proud to contribute to this prestigious competition. The regatta is another step towards promoting this watersport and a milestone for positioning Bulgarian yachting on the global scene.
The main organizer of the event was the “Cor Caroli” foundation, while co-hosts were Varna Municipality, Bourgas Municipality, Bulgarian Navy, Marina “Balchik”, Marina “Dinevi”, Port of Varna, Port of Bourgas, Medical University – Varna and Yacht club “Capt. G. Georgiev” – Port Varna.
The main judge of the race was Henrich Kokonchev.
35 yachts joined this year’s sailing regatta. Their crews were racing from the 15th till the 18th of August. We saw very young sailors, with little experience, among the 250 contenders. The youngest mariner, a 9-year-old boy from Russia, was part of his father’s crew.
The first day started with a few short (2.5 nautical miles) races in Varna bay, which excited the crowds. The people that gathered for both the regatta and Varna’s day were also greeted with a diverse show program with fun events and music.
Part of the iCard team met visitors at our stand at “Seaport” – Varna. Citizens and guests joined the games we organized for them. After answering a question about iCard Digital Wallet, people received nice gifts. Children were gifted pirate masks, hats and colouring chalks for their sea-inspired asphalt drawings near the iCard stand.
The awards ceremony for the first-day short races took place in the evening on the 15th of August during the official regatta opening. The near-shore prizes were handed by the mayor of Varna – Mr Ivan Portnih.
The CEO of iCard – Mr Yavor Petrov – took part as well with special gifts from iCard. Among the other guests were the Chief of Staff of the Bulgarian Navy Cap. Kamen Kukurov, Kristian Dimitrov – Director of Sports Directorate at Varna municipality and Minko Hristov, who is the Chief Executive Director of the Palace of Culture and Sports.
On the 16th of August and the 2nd day of the regatta, sailors took off towards Balchik, then took sharp turn south to the next point of the race – St. Vlas. The final destination was Bourgas. The eastbound winds created excellent conditions for a contested finish of the international sailing regatta “Cor Caroli iCard”. The race ended with winners in a few different classes and a prize for the fastest yacht in the 80-mile chase. They stopped the watches at 14 hours and 55 minutes total time.
For the first time in the 19-year history of the regatta, Bourgas was the host city of the awards ceremony and it took place at the harbour. The “blue ribbon” and the trophy went to the crew of “Evil Woman” from “Sv. Nikola” club in Sofia.
We at iCard want to thank the organizers, partners, participants and guests of the event. All of you contributed towards an unmatched atmosphere during the “Cor Caroli iCard” regatta. Together we proved that the adventurer spirit, teamwork and aiming at high achievements are irreplaceable qualities both in sports and in business. iCard will continue to support these values, which are also part of our corporate culture.
