If you have to choose between going shopping at the mall or shopping online – what would you choose? How often do you shop online? Do you feel safe while shopping online?
A lot of questions and all of them are very relevant and important. Do you want to know some easy tips on how to shop online more safely and efficiently? I want and I bet you do want it too.
Use only secure, famous, or familiar sites
Shopping online can be a tricky task if use various random sites you just saw online. There are a lot of online scams and frauds. You should be careful when you choose which sites to use and which ones you can trust to give your credit card details. Not every online shop is actually a real one.
When I first started online shopping, I had trouble differentiating which shops are real and which are fake. As time passes it’s getting easier and easier, but here are some conclusions I’ve come up with my “little” online shopping experience.
Firstly, it’s better to choose more famous and familiar websites, which in most of the cases, are a safer and more preferable option. You can also check the reviews of the site on social media or famous forums. In this way, you will get familiar with the other customers` experience with this site and learn from their mistakes. It’s common knowledge that people like to complain about a product, but they rarely comment when they like something. It’s a bad habit, but in our situation, it will be very beneficial, because it will give us the much-needed information. It is also a good option to choose sites that use the HTTPS protocol which is the more secure version of the HTTP protocol. Another important trick to use is to always check if the ad you saw online is actually linked to the official website of the company. This will help you stay away from scammers who duplicate the original site and try to steal your data. It is also important to be cautious around Black Friday time. Most of the online shops offer deals which are too good to be true and in most cases, they’re not.
Pay safe – use virtual cards
Another important thing to do while shopping online is to use virtual cards instead of your main debit or credit card. If you follow the previous tip and use only famous and familiar sites, there is still a huge chance to get scammed. In most cases when you shop online, you have to pay your purchases online and you give your credit card details. You will say it’s an ordinary procedure. But is it really like that? Technically those websites use the regular payment methods and you can use your PayPal account or any other payment institution, but if they duplicate the form where you enter your details and collect them, you may get into trouble.
One of my best friends was in such an unpleasant situation. She bought the best pair of shoes on a tremendous 60% off deal. But there was a surprise at the end of the customer journey. When she entered her card details, she had to pay not only for the shoes but also for her “smart” behavior choosing this site. From her card were withdrawn more than 550 euro before she even noticed. Since that moment she is very cautious when she pays anything online. She found the iCard`s digital wallet app, which offers to pay online purchases using virtual cards. Those cards are super easy and safe to use and they are not linked to your official debit card. She put some money on the virtual card and she pays without worrying that someone will steal her money because she can freeze the card immediately after paying. In this way, no one can take money than she hasn`t allowed and she doesn`t have to worry anymore.
Choose your passwords wisely
The next important thing is to choose your passwords wisely, especially when it comes to financial services or paying purchases online. Using those kinds of financial apps, web platforms or digital wallets can be a plus and very beneficial. But it can also be a disaster if you choose a weak password and someone steals your data or withdraw your money. The situation is more or less the same when it comes to online shopping – it is more convenient to pay your purchases online but at the same time, it is more dangerous to give your data in order not to get scammed. Choosing a password can be a tricky task. You should be careful not to use the most commonly used passwords such as numbers from 1 to 8 or the first letters from the alphabet. Those passwords are easily guessed and are more likely to be a potential subject of the hackers. The perfect password you can use is the one that contains all of the required elements – capital letters, numbers, and a special character. Most people say that you should change your password frequently. I don`t follow this tip, because I have trouble remembering my passwords.
All of those previous elements are very important but it’s also very important to remember the password. A few years ago my main problem with setting my passwords was to remember them. I was setting the perfect password, using all the suggested elements and then on the next weak I couldn’t remember it and had to change it. That’s why I love the fingerprint verification of my digital wallet. It’s easy, convenient, and most importantly secure.
There are a lot of articles and YouTube videos online on how to choose the most secure password. My favorite one is this one. It focuses on how to choose the right password, explains how the hackers steal our passwords, and give some very useful advices on how to protect our data.
Shopping online is a very useful way to purchase everything you need and even more. Most of the people on Earth use it all the time. But is it actually safe? Yes, of course, but if you just know how to do it in the right way. You should choose the right online shop, use the secured password, and pay with a virtual cards. Use these tips and be more cautious and you’ll be fine.0
