As part of Gen Z, I am completely unfamiliar with what life before the internet looked like. How am I even supposed to go to a certain location without using my phone? How are my friends going to know which club I’ve gone without posting it on my insta story? How am I going to meet the love of my life without Tinder matches? I know that life is possible without having my phone around me, but still, we have these tools that support us through each and every activity, decision, and action we take. So, I decided to investigate and share my findings. In order to find in detail what changed due to the internet I turned to the most knowledgeable source of them all, and that was yet again the Internet.
Social Media made our lives more connected!
The First and the biggest change that we have experienced due to the internet is the creation of Social Media Networks. From MySpace to TikTok and the media giants, Facebook, and Instagram, it is evident that we have made a lot of interactions online. Not only that we use the platforms, but we truly love the social exchange they present us with. A study by Mintel (2020) shows that five out of ten users find it hard to imagine their lives without having social networks. Even though in the last few years some negative aspects of the Internet were unveiled, like data breaches and hate speech, people cannot detach themselves from the effortless communication and systematic information flow.
We turned to the Internet to help us find our special one!
Love life is a crazy topic, but you know what, the internet has equally helped me in a way andworsened my situation. Nowadays, you can literally meet someone on the other side of the world and start talking to them. However, matching on Tinder, and texting online is not the only opportunity that I take advantage of to get to know someone. Now that I can literally see everything about them on their Facebook profile, without even going on a date, I am not completely sure if this has a positive influence on my love life. We present one thing on social media and usually our lives are looking the complete opposite. I sometimes find myself judging people on what they post before even meeting them in person. On the contrary, it is kind of safer because now I can investigate the past of the people I am chatting with. This of course I consider information gathering but others might call stalking.
We have all the information we need to live that Healthy and Balanced life!
When it comes to health, the internet has tried everything to keep us informed on all the trends and superfoods we can consume to live until our golden hundreds. On the more serious note, apps like MyFitnessPal has given us the option to know everything about our calorie intake and our exercise needs. Therefore, we have no excuse to not live a balanced and healthy life!
Rather than going to the theater we can choose from thousands of movies online!
Being able to watch “Friends” on a daily basis is a blessing in disguise. The internet gives us ultimate access to all of our favorite shows, games, and music. The theatre is not dead, concerts are still thrilling, but now we have all of this entertainment implemented in every second of our days. Yet again here am I filling my free time with too much meaningless Netflix and Chilling but at least I know that I can never get bored.
We turned to Online Banking rather than going to the Bank!
The fintech industry has completely turned the game around in the past decade. Now we can use cryptocurrencies, digital wallets and through that, the use of cash becomes somewhat pointless. Nevertheless, now I don’t need to carry a wallet and everything is on my phone. Apps like “iCard” have changed everything for users like me. I personally hate waiting in a queue and now I can get effective customer service without even going physically to a bank. Not only that but such companies like “iCard” present additional features like Virtual Cards, Visa Infinity and Mobile Payments. This is the perfect invention for everyone who wants to be safe with their money, efficient with their time, and to manage their finances effectively.
We can make our homes Smarter!
Robot Vacuums, Smart TVs, and Audio Systems, Amazon’s Alexa, Smart Light Bulbs – Everything can be technologically advanced these days. You can literally talk to your house now. Do I love it? Yeah, why not? Except for the moments that I start doubting that the programmers in Amazon are listening to what I am saying, everything else is amazing.
We can travel freely and have control over our trips!
Save the best for the last they’ve said. Traveling has become one of the main activities that we seek during our leisure time. I cannot imagine my life without being able to travel around the world. This is probably one aspect that the Internet has completely turned around. These days you can check, see, and even travel to a destination digitally. Nowadays it is simple to find the cheapest flights through Google Flights and hire your own accommodation through airbnb. This makes travelling so much easier and you can have the entire control over your vacation. The Internet has made our travels even more, exciting, and opportunistic.
You have to be a real hypocrite if you say that the Internet didn’t have an influence over our routine lives. It is evident that everything changed drastically in the past few decades. All these innovations find a way to excite me every day and to better my life in a way. I cannot wait to see what the world holds for us!2
