Every time I search for career advice online, I find one statement that is highlighted – Find a job you love and you won’t work a single day in your life. Then I ask myself – Is this actually true? I was thinking I found my dream job when I started working in hospitality. As a person who is good at communication and building human connection, working with guests from all around the world was extremely satisfying. Honestly I loved my job. Now, when I go back in time, I can say that the person I was working for was actually transforming the work into pleasure. He used to motivate, inspire and make the team stronger and I can certainly call him a leader. Maybe it is a state of mind, a skill or just a method of communication, but leadership can certainly make a job adorable for the employees. In this case we can change the cliché as follows:
Find a job you love, work with the right people and you won’t have a single working day.
Later on I had to work for people who were bossy, who yell and don’t listen. Yes, this smashed my motivation and made me feel miserable. I started hating my job and I asked myself why. What have changed? The job was similar, meeting new guests was as exciting as my day one and the salary was moving only up. But the people I was working for were different. This is how I understood the difference between a leader and a boss.
Now I am asking you to think about the worst person you ever worked for. Does the memory of him frustrate you? Do you find the job unsatisfying due to his bossy attitude? Do you want to be like him?
Leading is a combination of skillset and mindset. The most important role is to guide the other people and influence what they do. It takes time and effort to learn how to manage a team efficiently.

The One Who Knows How To Communicate
Communication is every leader’s strongest weapon through which he connect with his employees, partners, customers and potential investors. If a person wants to motivate, inspire or engage other people he needs to know the power of words and how to use it. Great leaders know that communication requires mastering certain skills:
- Listening – if a person wants to make a stronger connection between his team members and himself, he needs to listen actively. This is the only way to understand the needs and worries of the others.

- Negotiation – knowing how to ask for the things you want is very important. Actually negotiation is compared with art because of its beauty of combining different communication skills. There is one rule for every negotiator that can be applied for great leaders as well – always be prepared or do your homework. You need to understand the others in order to make an agreement. Great communicators lead because they have the right skills to teach and motivate their human resource. They know the importance of listening, making open conversations and connecting with the team. Mastering communication is a must for every leader if he wants to evolve from good to legendary.
The One Who Doesn’t Give Orders But Teaches Instead
Instead of giving orders, inspire the people with the beauty of the sea and they will be motivated to build a ship. The Best Leaders Are Great Teachers. Leading is about making people share your vision and motivating them to achieve it. Giving orders has a negative effect for productivity. However encouraging creativity and teaching how to pursue the main goal can contribute to success. The leader must serve as a role model and support the personal and professional growth of each employee. A team is as strong as its weakest player. If somebody makes a mistake, the leader should correct him and teach him how to avoid it in the future. Last but not least, successful mentor knows that whoever leads people is the one responsible for them.
The One Who Gives And Asks For Feedback
It is true that nobody likes criticism. However feedback, especially constructive, is 10 times more important than compliments. If you ask why, the answer is simple. Because there is always something that can be improved and sometimes we are so focused on our job that we can’t see our mistakes. A small comment from a person with different perspective can easily open our eyes and show us a better way to work or create things. Through feedback people can discover areas which need improvement and things that seem wrong.
A leader must be direct when it comes to giving grades to his employees. His team must have a clear vision what he thinks about their work and how it can be improved. Apart from expressing opinion, a smart leader must insist a feedback from his employees as well. This is the only way he can understand his strengths and weaknesses.
The One Who Knows How To Lead Himself
There is not a single definition of leadership. Everyone understands it differently. One thing is for sure, nobody can become an effective leader if he doesn’t understands his own value and principles. The right question is not what you lead, but how and why. Growing mentally and building the right self-esteem can help you lead the world and here is how:
- Self-Investing – acquiring new skills and knowledge is the most important investment for a leader. Taking a class, reading a new book each month, prioritizing self-care or even hiring a business coach can increase productivity. So far, I was describing what a leader is and how you can become one. Being a boss, on the other hand, is all connected to the opposite way of management where you use fear rather than motivation. In may be successful for some businesses but it is definitely unsatisfying for both head and employees. In the next few lines, I will explain how to differ bosses from leaders. You can call yourself a boss if:
- You don’t receive critics and feedback from your team.
- You focus your energy on planning your own work rather than your teams.
- You speak only about work with your team members. There are no other topics for conversation.
- When you ask your team, what are the top 3 goals of the company and everyone responds with different answer.
