World’s Children’s Day is on the 20th of November. It makes us think about the children and their needs. Was your childhood happy and filled with smiles, good friends, and unforgettable moments?
Do you know that almost 1200 children and teenagers between the age of 10 and 19 in Europe lose their lives to suicide per year? Around 74 000 young people in Bulgaria of the same age live with a mental disorder. In Europe, their number is 9 million. Unfortunately, every year more and more teenagers are struggling with sadness, stress, and depression. The negative changes in their lives since the COVID-19 pandemic are making their anxiety even worse.
World’s Children’s Day aims to promote international togetherness and awareness among children around the world. Every year this day is coordinated by UNICEF. The organization is making children reimagine a better world for themselves. Today we call on you to become part of the initiative for helping young people to deal with mental health problems.
iCard stands behind the activities of UNICEF Bulgaria to help children and adolescents to overcome depression and anxiety. We believe that together we can achieve these goals. Learn how we can overcome the challenges concerning the mental health of young people and see how you can donate to UNICEF Bulgaria.
The problem
Every year 1 out of 5 young people in the world is experiencing a mental health disorder. Many of these problems remain hidden because children are ashamed to share them with a loved one or a professional. Unfortunately, hiding such important things as mental disorders sometimes leads to serious consequences – in Europe 1 out of 5 deaths among 15 to 19-year-olds is caused by intentional self-harm. This is the second most prevalent cause of death of teenagers after road accidents.
Mental health is an important topic that has to be discussed among all generations in the world. According to UNICEF Bulgaria, young people are one of the most vulnerable age groups in terms of mental health. The stress that comes with the physical and emotional changes that adolescents go through at puberty can negatively affect their mental well-being.
The solution
To help children and adolescents with mental health problems, UNICEF Bulgaria has planned to develop a program for help and support. The online platform will be created with the joint efforts of donors and partners.
A free website and mobile app which will provide young people in Bulgaria with information for self-care will be created during the first stage of the project. The platform will contain useful facts and tips that are easy to find and follow.
There, teenagers will be able to find reliable and useful information coming from professionals. Adolescents will discover various tips and skills for dealing with everyday challenges. They will be able to find personal stories of their peers who have gone through the same, as well as useful resources and contacts of support services.
The second stage of the project will include the making of an online platform in which young people will be able to communicate directly with psychologists, social workers, and other professionals. The teenagers will have the opportunity to consult and, if necessary, to receive support.
